On Syria's election as UN Security council non- permanent member
Syria, Politics, 10/12/2001

The BBC correspondent in Jerusalem said in a report issued on Wednesday that contrary to the position of the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, who opposes Syria's election as a non- permanent member at the UN Security Council, however, sources at the Israeli foreign ministry see that this will be positive in the sense that Syria will be from now on committed to UN anti- terrorism norms, according to these sources.

The correspondent added that Syria's winning this seat was not surprising for Israel, but the real surprise was the results of the UN GA voting as 160 GA members states out of 177 voted for Syria to be a member at the UN and that Israel was the only one which opposed Syria's election as a member at the UN Security Council.

The correspondent indicated that the second unpleasant surprise for Israel was that the US did not oppose Syria's election nor tried to convince other countries to vote against it despite the tremendous efforts made by a pro- Israeli group in the US congress at the Bush administration and this was at the request of the Israeli embassy in Washington and the influential Jewish lobby in the US.

The correspondent considered that Israel which pinned hope that the US will succeed in foiling Syria's election to the UN Security council, just as it did one year earlier when it ( the US) prevented Sudan's election to the council at the pretext that it sponsors Islamic fundamentalist organizations, could not even convince one state to oppose Syria's election and thereby Syria will be as from the beginning of 2002 a member at the highest UN sides concerned with peace making in the world.
