The Arab states and the war in Afghanistan
Regional-Afghanistan, Politics, 10/11/2001
The Belgian daily " Le soire " has stated that there is no regime in both the Arab and Islamic world which is ready for its own stability to give support to the US in its strikes against Afghanistan.
In its Wednesday's commentary the paper added that the delay of the Arab and Islamic states in declaring a common stand in the declared war against terrorism by Washington is of fears of the reaction of the public and the political weight of the Muslim brothers in certain countries like Jordan and Egypt, despite their military alliances with America and of the " feelings of hatred to America and sympathy with the Afghans."
The paper indicated the role of the Wahabi sect in a country like Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states which preferred to keep silence instead of supporting the bombardment of Afghanistan have fears on their own stability while other countries like Turkey has fears of the reflection of the American strikes on its economy and the stability of its neighbors like Syria and Iraq. The paper added that even Malaysia refused support for the military operations in Afghanistan while Indonesia asked the US not to be irrational.
