OIC emergency meeting, al-Shara: accusing Arabs and Muslims of terrorism is futile, promoted by Israel
Syria-Regional, Politics, 10/10/2001
The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara arrived on Tuesday in Doha in order to take part in the emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) due to be held today Wednesday.
Upon arriving at Doha's airport al-Shara was welcomed by high ranking officials. In an arrival statement al-Shara said that Syria's position is based on two main titles: First: What is of concern to the Arabs and Muslims in general and preserve their rights and the second is: what is taking place in the context of the UN.
Replying to a question on whether Syria has a work paper that will be submitted to the conference, the Foreign minister said:" We have certain ideas and not a work paper, because we want to hear views of our brothers in this conference. We stress the main principles which preserve the rights of Arabs and Muslims."
The Foreign minister also underlined the importance of relying on the UN as a framework for any move for fighting terrorism and to make a distinction between terrorism and the legitimate resistance against foreign occupation, not to kill civilians and destroy their properties, to be careful in using means in fighting terrorism and to concentrate on political means to this end as well as to try not to attach Arabs and Muslims to terrorism in any part of the world.
On the other hand al-Shara during his stay in Doha, received a telephone call from the British foreign minister Jacque Straw during which discussions dealt with latest developments on the regional and international arenas.
