Jordanian government takes freedom restrictions measures against the press

In its recent issue, the Jordanian weekly al-Majd said that the Jordanian Cabinet decided last week to adopt a series of legal amendments and punishment measures targeting to alleviate the ceiling of written- self expression freedom in the press and in speeches in seminars, festivals and on the Internet in the country.

Well-informed sources told the paper that these measures were unprecedented in the country since the beginning of the democratic change, noting that conditions are preceding to what the situation was during the " emergency law" phase.

These sources indicated that amendments that are to be introduced aim at tighten the government's fist to bring those who make violations among writers, dailies chief editors and Internet sites correspondents to the state's security court especially those who, through internet messages underestimate the dignity of the royal family and the country.

The same sources explained that the Jordanian prime minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb asked his ministers after adopting these measures and arrangements last Friday o keep them secret at the meantime awaiting to declare them at due time.

The paper said that in this regard the Jordanian security authorities arrested last week two of the cadres of the banned Islamic liberation party ( Hizb al-Tahrir al- Islami ). And this was in the course of the detention campaign which covered several persons who are considered involved in extremist fundamentalist trends in Jordan. The two detained men, according to the paper sources are Sameer Saeed Nu'eirat and Ali Mohsin al-Shalabi from Irbid.

The spokesman for the Jordanian Muslim brothers group Jamil Abu Baker said that the Jordanian authorities last week arrested several tens of the activists of the Islamic movements in Jordan including 15 members of the Muslim brothers group.
