SCIA backs Mubarak's call
Egypt, Politics, 10/9/2001

Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) held a forum that was attended by the Mufti of the Republic Nassr Farid Wassil and a number of Muslim scholars and officials. They affirmed their support to President Mubarak' call for holding an international conference against terrorism.

The attendants stressed that Islam rejects terrorism and that they must combat it by means of reason, logic and wisdom, especially in the light of unjust allegations against Islam in the western media.

"Islam is strong in itself and with those who believe in it. It is the religion of peace and security for all peoples as it is a self-contained religion and civilization," said Wassil.

"Regrettably, Islamic media means hardly ever reaches beyond Islamic societies. Even those who reach foreign countries may express out-of-context ideas that may later be used against Muslims," he noted.

Wassil referred to his meeting with an Italian university professor during the conference on religions held recently in Italy. He said that she told him that the conference gave her a chance to know a lot of facts about Islam.

"She was shocked when she asked her students about their concept of Islam since they told her that they believe Islam is embodied in Osama Ben Ladin, the international terrorist who destroyed some facilities in the US and all over the world," he added.

Due to overwhelming Zionist media, the western youth think the call for Islam is a political not a religious one, he quoted her as saying.

On a lecture on the ' Objectives of Islamic Sharia' ', the Mufti said that Islamic Sharia' aims at realizing good for all peoples.

'The Muslim believes in all divine messages. However, the Sharia' may differ from one time to another to cope with the progress of humanity,' concluded Dr. Wassil.
