EU supports Mubarak's call on terrorism-combat
Egypt-European Union, Politics, 10/9/2001
A visiting EU delegation, led by Head of Al Mashreq Committee, voiced support for President Hosni Mubarak's call for holding an international conference on terrorism-combat.
During a meeting with Shura Council Speaker Mustafa Kamal Helmi, the delegation asserted that international issues should be tackled wisely and accurately, especially following the September 11 attacks on the U.S.
"There is a difference between the asylum right which is given to political figures and granting it to terrorists," according to the delegation.
Also, there is a difference between terrorism and the people's legitimate right to national resistance.
The Head of the EU delegation, meantime, praised President Mubarak's wisdom and his strenuous efforts in support of a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
The delegation also met with People's Assembly Speaker Ahmad Fathi Sorour.
During the meeting, Sorour pointed out the terror events in the U.S. figured high on the agenda of the meeting.
"The European Parliament had voted for a resolution on the Palestinian people's right to establish their independent state," Sorour said.
"The Parliament has delivered this message to European governments and via diplomatic channels," Sorour added.
Head of the EU delegation, on his part, condemned the continued embargo imposed on the Iraqi people.
"The Palestinian issue should be settled and the UN-imposed embargo on Iraq should be lifted," according to the EU official.
The meeting was attended by a number of heads of committee at the People's Assembly, in addition to the EU ambassador in Cairo.
Meantime, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and land Reclamation Youssef Wali said that Egypt under President Hosni Mubarak was the first to warn against the gravity of terrorism to all peoples, pointing out that the current international efforts to combat terrorism were consistent with Egypt's call for holding an international conference to stamp out terrorism.
Wali's statements came during a meeting he had on Monday with a delegation of the European Parliament under Michel Dari, under-Secretary of the Parliament, currently visiting Cairo.
The meeting took up cooperation between Egypt and the European Parliament in the various domains.
Wali said that Egypt was keen on signing the Egyptian European partnership agreements.
Members of the European Parliament delegation voiced the EU keenness on developing relations with Egypt within the framework of the partnership agreements, expected to be ratified by the European Union and the Egyptian People's Assembly soon.
