Morocco voices attachment to wise, temperate handling of ongoing operation against Taliban
Morocco-Afghanistan, Politics, 10/8/2001

Morocco has expressed early Monday its attachment to "a wise and temperate handling of the military operation underway against the Talibans."

A statement by the Moroccan ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation said the operations should have clear and precise targets in order to spare innocent lives and must contribute to strengthen the international consensus achieved around the fight against terrorism, in line with relevant United Nations resolutions.

These operations must by no means divert the international community's attention from the Palestinian issue, the statement said, adding Morocco deems the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli dialogue a priority to reach the soonest possible a fair, lasting settlement.

Here follows the full text of the statement:

The Kingdom of Morocco has followed with special attention and keen interest developments that happened on the international scene since last September 11.

These past days, the hypothesis of an operational action of military nature seemed ineluctable. Military intervention is today a reality.

In this regard, the kingdom of Morocco expresses its attachment to a wise and temperate handling of the operation underway. Morocco considers that for the operations engaged to be efficient, they should have clear and precise targets in order to spare innocent lives. They must also contribute to strengthening the international consensus achieved around the goal to fight terrorism, in line with relevant United Nations resolutions.

The Kingdom of Morocco finally deems that the ongoing actions should by no means divert the international community's attention from the Palestinian issue, Morocco considering the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli dialogue a priority in order to reach the soonest possible a fair and lasting settlement.
