On Syria's joining the UN security council

The Israeli daily " Jerusalem Post" said on Sunday that undoubtedly Syria will get a seat at the UN Security Council on Monday ( today) after the US has decided not to try to prevent it from doing so.
The paper added that several members of the US Congress expressed their protest last Thursday and Friday after they were frightened by the idea that a country listed by the US as terrorism sponsor will join the UN security council.
The paper added the member of the US democratic congress member for New York Eliot Engle sent a message sent by 25 congress members to the US President George Bush calling on him to oppose Syria's request to get a seat at the UN security council.
The paper quoted American sources as saying that Washington is planning to abtain from voting and it explained that to Syria which the Americans try to join it to an anti terrorism alliance, noting that this agreement was made when the US secretary of state Colin Powell visited Syria and got, then, Syrian promises to close the Syrian- Iraqi oil pipeline.
The US former under secretary of state Edward Walker, who defended the idea that the attacks at the US might ensure the appropriate chance for new Syrian- American relations, said that the US administration does not want to oppose Syria's membership at the UN Security Council at the meantime because it has some hope that Damascus will change her stances.
Walker explained that the US would not have been able to obstruct Syria's joining the UN security council even if it ( the US ) have tries to do so.
