Guinea Bissau denies backing to so-called Sahrawi republic
Morocco-Guinea, Politics, 10/6/2001
Guinea Bissau on Friday denied information circulated by the Polisario separatists on this African country's backing to the mirage Sahrawi republic (SADR/self-proclaimed by the Polisario).
"The position of the President of Guinea Bissau is clear-cut: We are with Morocco, a friendly country, in any issue that the Kingdom should handle, whether in foreign policy or other," Ernest Carvalho, state minister and advisor to the President of Guinea Bissau, Koumba Yalla, told MAP news agency.
"The stand of Guinea Bissau will always be with Morocco," said the official, who had handed Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, a message from President Yalla to King Mohammed VI.
Guinea Bissau backs the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, and the whole content of the release circulated by the Polisario is absolutely false," he affirmed, adding that President Yalla will make a statement shortly to renew the denial of such allegations published by the Polisario separatists after a meeting last July 17 between the Guinea Bissau President and a Polisario representative.
The President dispatched me to Morocco with a message to King Mohammed VI after he was informed of the Polisario allegations, he said.
He stressed that Guinea Bissau is grateful to Morocco for its support to the African country's struggle for independence.
