US Congress member against Syria's membership at the UN Security Council
Syria-USA, Politics, 10/6/2001
Member of the international relations committee at the US congress Tom Lantos said that the US has to resist Syria's attempt to win a seat at the UN Security Council next week because this will not be in compliance with Washington's war against terrorism.
News reports quoted Lantos as saying that electing Syria as a member at the UN Security Council will be a violation to the recent UN Security Council resolutions on fighting terrorism.
News reports also quoted other diplomats in Washington saying that regardless to the US opposition, Syria which is accused by Washington of sponsoring terrorism will win the seat to the UN Security Council.
The reports explained that Syria is a candidate to occupy one of five seat at the UN Security Council after the Arab states unanimously chosen her for the Arab seat, adding that Syria also received the support of the Asian group, the largest group at the UN. The reports continued that the UN general assembly which is composed of 189 states will vote on this matter on Monday.
