Italian President: eliminating terrorism can be through achieving just peace in the Middle East

The Italian President Carlo Chambi has expressed his honor to Islam. He added on Wednesday during his meeting with several Muslim intellectuals who came to Rome that Islam is a great religion and of great culture that deserves our respect.

The Italian President stressed the need of holding religions and civilizations equal. He stressed that exterminating terrorism can be achieved only through establishing just peace in the Middle East.

However, an Islamic- Christian conference was opened on Wednesday in Italy in order to create a bridge between the two religions. The conference is attended by 16 of prominent Muslim clergies together with several Catholic clergies. The conference was inaugurated by a speech delivered by former Italian President Oscar Scalvaro with his side Sheikh Youssef al-Qirdawi ( a prominent Sheikh from Egypt very well known in the Arab world) and the archbishop of Milano Cardinal Carlo Martini.

Meantime, the French prime minister Lionel Jospin stressed on Wednesday that France will not permit any aggressive acts towards Muslims in France. Jospin who was speaking before the French national assembly ( the parliament) said that racial acts and discriminatory behaviors will be sued by the judiciary.

For his part, Pope John Paul II stressed that religion should not be behind the eruption of conflicts, calling on Muslims and Christians and those who embrace other religions to strengthen reciprocated dialogue and the call for giving up violence.

The Pope stressed in his public sermon at Saint Peter square in the Vatican the importance of dialogue among religions for strengthening world peace. The Pope added: " I do encourage Christians to co-operate with Muslims to develop the genuine progress in the society."

The Pope also urged in his weekly sermon both Christians, Muslims and other religions to build a society of people who love life and built on grounds of justice and solidarity.
