United Arab Emirates, Politics, 10/5/2001

The ruler of Sharja Sheikh Sultan al-Qasimi has appointed five women in the Emirate's consultation council which was established in 1999, which is an unprecedented matter in the United Arab Emirates which is composed of other 6 Emirates.

The UAE News agency said that Sheikh Sultan al-Qasimi appointed the new members of the council, which is composed of 35 man and five women.

This is, however, the first participation for the woman in a council of that kind in the UAE and the second in an Arab Gulf states after Bahrain.

Worthy mentioning that the consultation council is in charge of giving views concerning the internal affairs of the Emirate ( Sharja ).
