Egypt, the first country to call for international conferance on terrorism
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 10/4/2001

Egyptian Presidential Political Advisor Osama Al-Baz asserted Egypt's clear stance Vis a Vis terrorism, as expressed by President Hosni Mubarak a long time ago.

Interviewed by "Hadith AL-Saa" (talk of the hour) TV show Wednesday night, Baz said the Egyptian President voiced the sympathy and condolences of the Egyptian people over the victims of the tragic September 11 attacks on the United States.

"Egypt was the first country to call for the need to hold an international conference, under the UN umbrella, on combating terrorism," he said.

Asked on the strike the U.S. plans to launch against Afghanistan, Baz said the word alliance is inaccurate because the alliance gives the impression that there is a military alliance comprising people with the same targets and strategic interests.

"This is not the case with the United States and Russia for instance or the United States and China or any other state," he said, pointing out that the aim was to reach an international grouping that would give legitimacy and help the United States in fighting terrorism.

He referred to the Arab world's sympathy with the US and American people because thousands of civilians were victims to a terrorist act.

On the impact of the expected US strike on the situation in the Middle East and the Palestinian issue in particular, Baz ruled out any direct effect, adding that the strike should be tantamount to the aggression on the US and away from any civilians.
