Complete set of surgical tools found in 6th dynasty tomb
Egypt, History, 10/4/2001
The 4,000-year old tomb takes the shape of a cellar, a style that prevailed during the reign of the 6th dynasty of the old kingdom.
The excavators found on the sides leading to the entrance colored paintings revealing scenes of daily life and sacrifice.
On the west side of the tomb they found an illusionary door carved of limestone with hieroglyphic inscriptions and remains of a blue colour.
The threshold bears the titles of the deceased as "senior physician of the royal palace," "entertainer of the palace" and the "secretary of the palace."
Head of the Giza antiquities area Zahi Hawas told an Arabic daily that the illusionary door was surrounded by a matchless magnificent alter.
He noted that the round alter made of alabaster bore a list of sacrifice and the titles of Qar.
Beside the alter there was found an alabaster stele, pottery, a cache including about 22 bronze statues and a burial well 20 metres deep.
"For the first time ever a complete collection of surgical tools that belonged to the senior physician was found," said Dr Hawas.
It includes a set of 30 scalpels and tweezers that were placed carefully within the tomb for Qar to use in the after world.
