Sudanese opposition members released
Sudan, Politics, 10/3/2001
The Sudanese specialized authorities on Monday released six members of the opposition leaders following suspension of the " Criminal case filed against them."
The Sudanese specialized authorities also suspended criminal measures taken against the leader of the Sudanese People's Congress party Hasssan al-Turabi, in line of the decision taken by the Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir, to this effect.
In a statement he made on Tuesday, the Sudanese minister of the Interior Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahim Hussein said that the specialized authorities in the country decided to keep al-Turabi in a " preventive imprisonment" according to the law proclaimed by the national security forces and therefore denying news talking about the release of al-Turabi.
For their part, the Sudanese political forces welcomed the decisions of the Sudanese president and described them as a positive step towards deciding comprehensive political settlement in the country.
In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Ayam, leader of the Sudanese al-Ummah council al-Sadeq al-Mahdi said that these measures are considered as an evidence on the care of the Sudanese President to maintain a comprehensive political solution. He called on the political forces to abide by giving up violence and to agree on practicing public freedoms and maintaining rights.
To this end, the Sudanese daily al-Anbaa ( news) described the decisions of the Sudanese President to this end as preparing for a new phase that takes into account the Sudanese interests apart from political forces conflicts.
The Sudanese President had instructions to the ministry of justice to release six members of the secretariat of the opposition's coalition and to suspend " criminal measures " against al-Turabi.
