Rare 6th dynasty statues unearthed
Egypt, History, 10/2/2001
The Japanese archaeological mission under Sakugi Yashimora unearthed a rare collection of statues of the gods and kings of the 6th dynasty, the old kingdom (4,000 years) at Abu Seir area, Al-Haram.
Gaballah Ali Gaballa, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said the mission unearthed statues of god Harbout Kirat as a child putting his forefinger in his mouth and wearing a royal headdress.
Hieroglyphic inscriptions for King Bibi I of the 6th Dynasty were found on some statues, including a statue on the left for goddess Sikh-met, the goddess of war in ancient Egypt.
Giza antiquities director Zahi Hawas said the mission also found the Horan (ascribed to god Horus) name of King Khufu (Cheops) carved on the back column of the statue of goddess Sikhmet.
Yoshimora said the finds affirm a relationship between Bibi I and Cheops on one hand and goddess Sikh-met on the other in the area of Menf.
