Berlusconi meets ambassadors of Islamic countries in Rome today
Regional-Italy, Politics, 10/2/2001

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will meet today with ambassadors of Islamic countries accredited in Rome to clarify his statements that were misunderstood as an insult against Islam or friendly Arab countries, cabinet sources said Monday.

During the meeting he called for in the aftermath of negative reactions triggered by his statements in Berlin on the superiority of the West over Islam, Berlusconi will explain that he only wanted to refer to the strenuous efforts exerted by the west to materialize the principles of equality, democracy and tolerance compared to tendencies by some Islamic quarters, meaning the Taliban movement in Afghanistan, to encourage terrorism and violence, added the sources.

"The premier's statements were misunderstood by some parties and used by political opposition in Italy and Europe against him, " they said.
