Seminar on trans-saharan road in Mali in november
Regional, Economics, 10/2/2001
A training seminar organized by the Trans-Saharan Road Liaison Committee (TRLC) will be held November 12-24, in BamaKo, Mali, to discuss a number of topics relating to various technical, economic and financial issues involved with the ongoing construction of the Trans-Saharan Road.
The OPEC Fund for International Development will grant US$25,000 to help finance the workshop.
Work on the road began in 1966 and, so far, some 3,000-Km of the planned 4,800 Km have been completed. Africa, north and South of the Sahara, is investing much hope in the project to help enhance trade and cooperation in the sub-region and thus contribute to Africa-Wide social and economic development.
The TRLC, mustering Algeria, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Tunisia, was established at the same time as the launch of the project and entrusted with the coordination and management of issues relating to the construction of the road. In addition to its biannual meetings, the TRLC organizes occasional workshops and seminars.
Twenty-eight participants from member countries will attend the two-week seminar. During the first week, an economic evaluation of the Trans-Saharan Road will take place, including a cost-benefit risk analysis, choice of maintenance strategies, budget matters and work plans. In the workshop's final week, technical and administrative staff will partake in a number of information-exchange discussions, and the management of the Malian road network will be reviewed, in particular its available financial, physique and human resources.
