Security Council freezes sources financing terrorism
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 10/1/2001
Egyptian permanent delegate to the United Nations Ahmed Abul Gheit Sunday expressed satisfaction with the Security Council resolution on freezing assets of sources financing terrorism.
Abul Gheit, in an interview with Cairo Radio said that the United Nations would hold a plenary session early in October on the international responsibility for fighting terrorism.
The Egyptian delegation to the UN will present President Hosni Mubarak's initiative on holding an international conference on fighting terrorism.
"Egypt has requested so many times from European countries, which were harbouring terrorists, to extradite those terrorists or people accused of terrorism, but they seemed reluctant to do so," Abul Gheit pointed out.
"The SC resolution did not specify groups in particular but referred to terrorism in general," he said.
Abul Gheit noted that there is a growingneed to verify how the international community will deal with the issues of struggle for liberation or resistance against occupation, terrorism practised by some states as well as occupying and occupation of other peoples' lands and attacking towns and defenseless people with tanks and fighter bombers.
Meanwhile the UN General Assembly will probe today means of beefing up efforts to fight terrorism in the wake of the Security Council's resolution obliging all countries to halt all ways of support for the terrorist networks.
Diplomats in the United Nations said the General Assembly's debates mirror the international community's determination to combat terrorism.
