Al Azhar Grand Imam receives Kharazi
Egypt-Iran, Religion, 10/1/2001

Grand Imam of A1 Azhar Sheikh Mohammad Sayed Tantawi received on Sunday Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi and his accompanying delegation.

"We have every respect and appreciation for the Islamic Republic of Iran and we always meet on religious occasions," said the Grand Imam during his meeting with Kharazi.

He said that study at A1 Azhar was based on moderation and respect of jurisprudence viewpoints, adding "we respect all educational institutes in Iran and we have relationships with our brethren in the Islamic Republic."

The Grand Imam said what happened in the United States could not be approved by any divine religion, adding that the culprits must be brought to justice.

"The party aggressed against has no right to punish a people, including children, the elderly and women," said the Grand Imam, adding that Islam preached tolerance and justice with enemy and friend alike.

On his part, the Iranian Minister expressed his thanks and appreciation for the Grade Imam, adding that such meetings would strengthen relations between the two countries.

He pointed out to the efforts exerted by Ayatollah Brogordy, a prominent Iranian scholar, and the former Sheikh of A1 Azhar Mahmoud Shaltout to bring viewpoints among the doctrines closer.

Kharazi said that he was in constant contact with Azhar's Ulema and their Iranian counterparts to promote Islam's message in the world.

He conveyed greetings of the Iranian officials, including President Mohammad Khatami, to the Grand Imam.
