Al-Bashir and lifting sanctions from Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 10/1/2001
The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has refused considering lifting the sanctions from Sudan as a bonus for it over " taking any decision" ( in remarks to US support for lifting the sanctions over Sudan's position in supporting US anti- terrorism campaign ). He stressed that this decision ( to lift the sanctions) will help improve the general atmosphere and positively reflect on the efforts to achieve peace in the country.
In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-A'am issued on Sunday, the Sudanese President said that the decision to lift the sanctions will have its positive reflections at the level of Sudan's relations with various countries in the world and international organizations especially financing establishments, noting that talks about lifting the sanctions came as a bonus for Sudan's position towards the terrorism fighting campaign is groundless and can be justified by developments of events.
The Sudanese President explained that the position of Egypt and Ethiopia, being the two countries directly involved in the issue, had a direct impact on the position of several states of permanent membership at the UN Security Council. He commended the role played by the Sudanese diplomacy in explaining Sudan's position and bringing view points together among the three capitals of Egypt, Libya and Sudan.
The Sudanese President said that the general internal atmosphere in Sudan, whether being the economic success or the political detente and area of political freedom advancing towards European- Sudanese dialogue and the openness on various world countries have been positively reflected in the fact that the international community embodied by the UN Security Council has reached the right decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Sudan.
