Syria, Egypt's concerns towards the international alliance to fighting terrorism
Regional-USA, Politics, 10/1/2001

The Sudanese daily al-Share' al-Seyasi ( political street) said on Saturday that the Syrian and Egyptian moves embody the concern of the two countries over the foundation of the terrorism fighting international alliance which is feared to be similar to what happened in the second Gulf war.

In its political analysis the paper said that the moves of the Egyptian President in the European Union and the contacts made between him and the US President George Bush as well as the Syrian stand which was declared after the visit of members of the European Union to Damascus, and the moves of the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara in Europe, all these moves reveal a clear Syrian- Egyptian concern and a hidden Arab fear of the establishment of the international alliance to fighting terrorism which is feared to be similar to what happened in the second Gulf war.

The paper indicated that according to all that Mubarak's call to convene an international conference to fighting terrorism has fallen rather than forming an international coalition as sought by the US.

The paper said when Damascus and Cairo joined the international coalition to striking Iraq it was not in their calculations that the US forces will work for building permanent stations, as it was believed by the two countries that the American forces and the allied troops will pullout after implementing their tasks and be replaced by the Syria, Egyptian and Saudi forces on the ground that Arab security is the responsibility of the Arabs themselves and no other side, but what happened that the American permanent stations were kept in the Gulf region and the Syrian and Egyptian forces pulled out.
