Terrorism tackled in OIC meetings
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 9/29/2001
Egyptian People's Assembly Speaker Ahmed Fathi Sorour said the meeting of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Council Union addressed the current situation which imposed itself on the conference agenda.
Speaking to MENA, Sorour said the conference was a political demonstration by Muslim parliamentarians to condemn terrorism and reiterated Islam's opposition to terrorism and its call for realizing peace.
"Participants discussed the issue of Al Quds (Jerusalem), reaffirming its Arab and Islamic identity," said Egypt's top lawmaker.
"The OIC legislators underlined the importance of restoring all the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to an independent state with Al Quds as its capital," he added.
Sorour, also Chairman of the OIC Councils Union, stressed that the 13-hour discussion of Iran-UAE dispute over Abu Moussa and Lesser and Greater Tunb islands overshadowed the conference. "Although the issue was extensively discussed by the executive committee, in bilateral meetings and by the councils union, no satisfactory formula to both UAE and Iran has been hammered out," he said.
"The UAE delegation wanted to include the issue on the agenda but the Iranians refused and proposed giving a statement that the two countries would settle their dispute via negotiations," said Sorour.
