Israeli attacks continued against the Palestinians, while Arafat- Peres were meeting
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 9/27/2001
While the meeting was held between the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres and the chairman of the palestinian Authority at Gaza airport, the Israeli tanks and artillery were bombarding vast areas in Rafah and its camp and this resulted in killing the Palestinian youth Mahmoud Jalal Qashta and wounding of 16 others, while tens of Palestinian houses were destroyed as a result.
News reports said that the meeting between Arafat and Peres was confined to " security" matters as Peres abstained from discussing political matters about the military siege, the settlements and re-occupation of the " Orient House." Peres just handed Arafat a list of conditions set by the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, including, in particular, handing over 108 Palestinians on top of them is Atif Obeidat and then taking all guns and weapons owned by the Palestinian police, total commitment to ceasing the Intifada and fire and then to start security co-ordination negotiations in order to carry out the Tenet plan and Mitchell package.
Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Oreikat said that it was agreed to resume security co-operation with Israel, while Peres said it was agreed to cease fire for one week, noting that he had received a telephone call from the US secretary of state Colin Powel in which he stressed the US administration support for Israel.
Meantime, the Israeli tanks and artillery bombarded the Rafah areas and the bombardment resulted in killing the Palestinian youth Mahmoud Jalal Qashta and wounding 16 others and destruction of several houses. These acts were followed by vast mopping up operation carried out by the Israeli forces.
The Palestinian retaliated by attacking Israeli positions near Nevet Kalim settlement and near Rafah and al-Beera and they hit an Israeli car near Baqa village.
Five Israeli soldiers were wounded in an explosion near an Israeli military position in Rafah as a result of an explosive placed in a nearby tunnel. The body of a woman settler was found near Maour settlement.
To this end, the Palestinian national resistance movement ( al-Jihad al-Islami) refused the cease- fire agreement reached by Peres and Arafat.
The spokesman for the al-Jihad al-Islami Abdullah al-Shami said that the movement will continue its resistance operations against Israel despite announcing the agreement.
Al-Shami added the" resistance operations and al-Jihad acts will continue, but if the Israeli soldiers stop killing Palestinian civilians we will do the same ( not kill Israeli civilians.) One of the Palestinian resistance movement leaders Ismael Abu Shanab stressed his movement ( Hamas) commitment to continue resistance operations until liberation from the Israeli occupation.
