Mubarak and Schroeder call for combating terrorism
Egypt-Germany, Politics, 9/26/2001
Egypt and Germany agreed on exerting all possible efforts for combating terrorism. This came in a join press conference held yesterday by President Mubarak and chancellor schroeder folloing a closing round of talk between the two leaders.
The German Chancller stressed that no party had any interest in turning the world's quest for combating torrorism to a confrontation between Islam and other civilizations, adding that nobody wished to hold Islam responsible for this.
"I confirmed to President Mubarak that Germany supports the US in its right to self defense," German Chancellor said.
"This support covers all possible measures," he added.
Schroeder said he agreed with Mubarak that one of the main means of fighting international terrorism is resuming the Middle East peace process, stressing that all parties should exert utmost efforts, pressures that could lead to settling such a conflict.
He underlined the importance of holding a meeting between Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, as it will help reach a solution to the Middle East problem.
President Mubarak, on his part, said he has met several times with Schroeder but yesterday's meeting was totally different from the previous ones as it was held in different circumstances.
"we had dealt with the Middle East problem and underscored the importance of holding an international conference against terrorism but the world at that time could not imagine that what has recently taken place could really happen " President Mubarak said, in a clear reference to September 11 terror attacks on Washington and New York.
The Egyptian leader stressed that what is now taking place on the Palestinian lands will increase terrorism in the world.
"I have mentioned before that war is much easier than terrorism because the war scene is limited but terrorism can occur any place. We have suffered a lot from terrorism in Egypt," Mubarak said.
