War is no means to settle problems, Moroccan press
Morocco-USA, Politics, 9/25/2001

Moroccan dailies of different trends, while unanimously denouncing terrorist attacks perpetrated September 11 against the USA, have stressed that War cannot be an efficient means to settle problems.

The Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS/in government) said Tuesday in a release published by its daily Al-Bayane that it rejects the use of military force to settle problems and called for political solutions rather than exposing world peace and security to dangers.

The PPS political bureau, which met Sunday to study the international situation in light of US preparations to wage war against Afghanistan, said it decries all forms of terrorism and called for "civilized means" to handle international conflicts.

Struggle against terrorism is an issue with a planetary dimension that concern all countries, the daily said, blaming industrial countries for treating the issue superficially.

What is required today is not crazy wars against innocent peoples but rather an opposition to terrorism at security, political, diplomatic and financial levels, the party said.

The PPS called for organizing the Moroccan public opinion so that Morocco proclaims, in a single responsible voice, its rejection of all forms of direct terrorism and destructive war.

For the National Rally of Independents (RNI/in government), the resort to immediate vengeance, under the effect of anger, will not be an efficient means to combat terrorism.

The Party, which decried terrorism, said any reaction should be conform to international legality and international law.

The RNI also denounced the anti-Arab and anti-Moslem campaign fomented by some western media, which deliberately associate Islam with terrorism.

It also voiced concern over the exploitation by Israel of the tragic attacks against the USA to further escalate its repression against the innocent and unarmed Palestinian people.

As a great superpower and sponsor of the Middle-East peace process, the USA should see to a fairer management of international conflicts, the Party added.

The Organization for Democratic and Popular Action (OADP) also denounced the terrorist attacks against the USA and voiced affliction over the loss of innocent lives in the attacks.

OADP, which backs the government of Abderrahmane Youssoufi without being represented in the cabinet, blamed the USA for being behind a media campaign meant to sow confusion and make of the Arab and Muslim nation a cradle of terrorism in a bid to tarnish the image of Arabs and Moslems.

The Moroccan Human Rights Organization (OMDH/independent), for its part, voiced deep concern over the assassination of Arabs and Moslems in the USA, describing the killings as racist.

The Organization also voiced preoccupation over the way the USA are handling the crisis.
