On President al-Assad cable of condolences to President Bush
Syria-USA, Politics, 9/24/2001

In its Saturday's issue, the Lebanese daily al-Nahar said that those who arrive from the US convey positive impressions concerning the response of the American administration to the cable of denunciation sent by President Bashar al-Assad to the US President George Bush concerning the terrorist attacks against New York and Washington.

In an analysis, al-Nahar said that it seemed very clear for the Americans the solidarity and sympathy expressed by President al-Assad in his cable which had no mention to any political situation, in contrary to what was done by Presidents of foreign and Arab Presidents when they remarked to bargain their condemnation of the attacks and their desire to co-operate in fighting terrorism by limited regional demands.

The paper added that it is not the first time in which the Syrians take a decision concerning terrorism carried out by extremist fundamentalist trends. By the beginning of the 1980 s the Syrians tested successfully leading the campaign of striking these trends in their country and in the year 2000 they tested it in Lebanon in striking same fundamentalist trends in al-Denyah steppes and al-Qaraoun and supported by the Syrians the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud on December 1999 gave his orders to the Lebanese army to carry out a large Ð scale attack at the extremist Sunni trends centers in al-Denyah steppes ( in Lebanon).

Al-Nahar added that the important part in President al-Assad's cable complies what he had stated in the two past days before many of his Lebanese visitors when he talked about the recent terrorist attacks and his saying that the position of the Arab leaders and officials is the same and no split among them on the need to fighting terrorism, noting that his cable came just few hours after the aggressions and in this cable he proposed finding out an international co-operation to fighting terrorism and uprooting it. The same position adopted by the American administration in the two days following the attacks.

President al-Assad explained, the paper said, that his early position towards the attacks embodied the Arab attitude which gives first and top priorities to withstanding this great problem and this made President al-Assad holding that Arab tour to reinforce this very trend. The President added that he has reached the conclusion that any international co-operation and co-ordination to counter terrorism, to attain success has to take into account two factors. The first is to maintain such a co-operation apart from Israel and also from any role that can be assigned to it to this end, and second a co-operation as such to be through the UN, definitely.
