A European Union protest to Syria
Syria-European Union, Politics, 9/22/2001
The London- based al- Hayat daily said on Friday quoting diplomatic sources in Brussels that the European Union on Tuesday submitted an official protest through diplomatic channels to the Syrian government over arresting ten political activists.
The paper could not get an official commentary on that in Damascus and the fact is Syria's position is based on rejecting interference in its internal affairs. The paper quoted well-informed sources as saying that the detention were made in line of the Syrian laws and constitution and because those activists had violated the " red lines" determined by the law.
The sources explained in Brussels that the protest did not intend to place pressure on the Syrian government nor being an interference in its internal affairs, rather in the framework of diplomatic contacts between the two sides and according to the Barcelona charter which was approved by Syria as well as the partnership negotiations which includes complete chapter about human rights, democracy and dialogue.
