Tourism recession in Yemen because of the attacks on the US
Yemen, Economics, 9/21/2001

Media sources in Sanaa have said that the tourism sector in the country has been greatly damaged because of the incidents that took place in the US.

The Yemeni weekly al-Wahda ( unity) issued on Thursday in Sanaa said that several world tourism agencies have canceled the travel of tourists groups to Yemen following the recent attacks on the US, noting the one of the Western airlines companies, Lufthansa suspended all its flights between Germany and Yemen.

The paper explained that the tourists groups which canceled visits to Yemen are from France, Germany, Italy and Britain, adding that tourism in Yemen from Europe constitutes 65% of the tourism volume in Yemen and almost 25% from the Arab states.

The sources continued that canceling tourism reservations to Yemen comes at a time when this country suffers from tourism turnout because of the security incidents like kidnapping foreign tourists and experts and the explosions events, mainly the "USS Cole" explosion and blowing off the electricity generation room at the British embassy.

During the few past months Sanaa had witnessed trials for several persons accused in the British embassy explosion incident. Four persons were sentence for many years in prison the longest is 15 years.
