Mubarak, Arafat held talks in Sharm El Sheikh
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 9/20/2001

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held a session of talks with Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat in Sharm El-Sheikh Wednesday.

"President Mubarak voiced hope Israel would respond to the Palestinian proposal to stop violence and embark on stopping coercive measures against the Palestinians," said Minister of Information Safwat El-Sherif on Wednesday.

In statements following the meeting Sherif said Mubarak and Arafat discussed the call sent by Arafat to the Israeli people and his initiative to intensively work towards a ceasefire on all fronts.

"Mubarak urged Israel to seize this historical moment, exercise self-restraint and disregard any individual reactions," said Sherif.

Mubarak and Arafat underlined the importance of exerting all efforts so that the world powers would undertake due responsibility to attain security and stability in the Middle East.

"He urged these powers to help the Palestinians and the Israelis provide the adequate atmosphere to push the peace process ahead for the interest of the region's peoples," said Sherif.

The Mubarak-Arafat talks also addressed the contacts Mubarak held with Arab leaders over the past few days.

The two leaders later held a plenary session of talks that included AL Sherif, Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and Presidential Political Advisor Osama Al-Baz.

On the Palestinian side, Culture Minister Yasser Abdrabbou, Local Government Minister Sa'eb Erekat, Arafat's advisor Nabil Abu Redina and chief of the preemptive security body Mohamed Dahlan were present.

Arafat arrived earlier in the day on a brief visit to Egypt.
