Egyptian Museum to celebrate 100th anniversary
Egypt, Local, 9/19/2001

A celebration will be held on November 10 to mark the centenary of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, officials said yesterday.

The festivities will include an exhibition of antiquities from all museums in Egypt as well as photos and old documents reflecting the history of the Cairo landmark. A three day conference will be held on the sidelines of the event, with up to 400 local and foreign researchers expected to attend.

The Ministry of Culture is planning to establish a new building near the Giza Pyramids to house the 100-year old museum's antiquities, Minister Farouk Hosni said yesterday. The project will be tendered to local and international bidders by the end of the month.

"The new museum will take three years to build and will cost $300 million," Hosni said, adding that it would be built on a 117 acre site.
