Sorour urges support for Mubarak's anti-terrorism conference, calls
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 9/18/2001
Egyptian People's Assembly Speaker Ahmad Fathi Sorour urged support for President Hosni Mubarak's call to hold an international anti-terrorism conference under the umbrella of the United Nations (UN) in order to sign an international terrorism-confronting treaty and cooperation in this respect.
In press statements, Sorour said that the international agreement the UN managed to clinch is not enough to deal with terrorism because organized crimes have various forms, including money laundering, gangster actions, drug trafficking and illicit arms trade while terrorism has many other forms.
He expressed regret over failure to implement President Mubarak's call to hold an international anti-terrorism conference, adding some countries, including European, have even harboured convicted Egyptian terrorists on their soil.
'President Mubarak's initiative is the only way to combat terrorism,' said Sorour.
The Parliament Speaker said the recent Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference in Burkina Faso issued a resolution -the first of its kind- condemning Israel due to its crimes in the occupied territories.
