Syria and the New US alliance

The Monte Carlo radio correspondent in Damascus said on Monday that the Syrian position towards Washington's call to establish an international alliance against terrorism is controversial among observers expectations that this will be an additional sensitive point in the Syrian- American relations because each side has a different base when it comes to identify terrorism.

The correspondent added that despite the fact that President Bashar al-Assad has called in his recent cable to the US President George Bush for co-operation to fight terrorism, well-informed sources stressed that Syria will not be able to abide by the conditions imposed by the US to this end, as Syria will not be able to expel the Palestinian opposition organizations which take Damascus as a headquarters especially as Syria does not consider these organization terrorists because they defend the rights of their people.

The circles indicated that work of these organization fall under the rules of the international legitimacy and Geneva charter. The same circles indicated that the Syrian leadership does not recognize the terrorism sponsoring states list adopted by Washington in which Syria is enrolled, because it is for Syria a list by one state ( the US) rather being international ( listed by the UN). The circles also stress that Washington should not react as a result of certain conditions, especially as any act conducted against any state and target the civilians, is considered as falling in the context of terrorism.
