The Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon set a precondition on Sunday that a time of 48 hours of complete calm in the occupied Palestinian territories to pass so that he will accept the convening of the meeting between the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres and the chairman of the Palestinian authority Yasser Arafat.
Sharon said before the Israeli Knesset that after 48 hours of complete calm Peres will be meeting with Arafat to work for discussing the cease- fire file and reaching an agreement of a time of 7-day of calmness which is the necessary precondition to implement the Mitchell plan and alleviate the siege imposed on the Palestinian people.
Sharon also set a precondition on that Arafat to declare suspension for the Israeli attacks on the occupied Palestinian territories.
Later in the day, Arafat announced readiness to meet with Peres at any time and place in order to give the peace process a push forward.
Following his meeting with the Greek foreign minister Arafat told journalists " we are ready to meet in Greece if this will boost the peace process." Arafat continued:" it was presumed that there will be a date for a meeting between us and Peres but the Israeli government canceled this meeting."
He stressed that the Palestinians are committed to any cease- fire with Israel- and they have announced that repeatedly, noting that while the Israelis say they want ceasing fire, they continue their air attacks against the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the Fatah movement in the West Bank Marwan al-Barghouthi said that the Palestinian Intifada will continue until the liberation of all occupied Palestinian territories. In a statement to the Qatari al-Jazira TV satellite station, al-Barghouthi added that " The Palestinian Authority had tried and announced cease fire during the past months, for many times, but the criminals in Tel Aviv continue their aggressions against the Palestinian people.
He indicated that Peres is a partner in the aggression against the Palestinians, noting that Sharon exploits the incidents in the USA to escalate its aggression against the Palestinian people and territories.
