The elections law in Yemen
Yemen, Politics, 9/17/2001
The ruling general people's conference in Yemen and the Yemeni opposition parties on Saturday agreed to settle points of differences relating to the project provided for amending the election law which was a controversial issue between the Yemeni government and the opposition since June.
A spokesman for the political committee emerged from the dialogue initiated between the opposition and the government said that members of the committee approved submitting the point of difference relating to the voting centers for military men to the legal committee in charge of studying all proposals.
The spokesman added that the two sides also agreed to a formula that states that the higher committee for the elections to include between 7 to 9 members and this formula states that the President of the republic to provide a list of candidates including this figure doubled ( between 14 to 18) to the parliament so as to choose the needed number of members before the President of the Republic to issue a decision provides for appointing them.
The agreement also states a principle which ensures the participation of the parties in the higher committee for the elections in order to provide proposals concerning candidates for the committee in consultation with the President of the Republic.
It is, however, presumed that the legal committee, which also includes men of law representing the government and the opposition is going to prepare the final formula for the draft law on September 21st.
