American pressures on the Arab countries
Regional-USA, Politics, 9/17/2001
The Monte Carlo radio in Washington said on Sunday that in the framework of the efforts aiming at isolating Afghanistan, Washington has called on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to withdraw their recognition of the Taliban government in Kabul.
The correspondent added that a meeting held on Friday by the US under secretary of state for the Middle East affairs included his main aides with most of the Arab ambassadors accredited in Washington, revealed that the distance is still far between Washington and certain Arab capitals on how to contain terrorism and the conditions set for any co-operation in this regard, noting that this meeting was attended by the ambassadors of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Algeria, the representative of the PLO and other Arab diplomats.
The correspondent quoted American diplomatic sources that the US under secretary of state informed the Arab ambassadors the content of a message handed to their governments including seven points considered by Washington as pivotal for the membership of these countries in the alliance against terrorism, including 1.. arresting terrorists existed in their countries and trying them; 2.. halting the movement of terrorists from and to their countries; 3.. Briefing their partners in the international community on information concerning terrorists; 4.. Arresting or expelling those who are wanted to the countries asking to have them back; 5.. Supporting the international initiatives to fighting terrorism at the UN and other international arenas; and 6.. Ending any tolerance with countries or entities supporting terrorism.
The correspondent indicated that following this intervention by the US under secretary of state discussions debated by the Arab ambassadors indicated the difficulty if not impossibility of solving the question of terrorism if this trend will not be solved in the context of diplomatic efforts to solve the Palestinian question. Certain Arab ambassadors also called for defining the concept of terrorism and the aims of the counter- violence campaign.
The diplomatic sources expected increasing American pressures in this regard to be made against the Arab states in the coming days and weeks.
