Maher stresses world's cohesion to fight terrorism
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 9/15/2001

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher stressed the importance of an international solidarity to combat the terrorism phenomenon which has become a menace for all.

He said he did not hear about a so-called international alliance against terrorism, noting that what he understood was the world's solidarity to combat terrorism.

In statements to the press late Thursday, Maher said President Hosni Mubarak proposed few years ago holding an international conference to face terrorism "and we do not propose this again now but rather remind of it."

But we did not hear about an alliance in the legal sense, he noted. He ruled out discussing any security cooperation with the US or offering assistance in case of carrying out any operations against perpetrators of the Tuesday's attacks in the US .

We did not hear about any country that has been asked to join such alliance, said Maher.

He added that Egypt does not join any alliances and that confronting such matters should take place through an international conference or under the canopy of global organizations such as the UN.

Maher said he does not comment on press reports as far as the investigations into the attacks were concerned. Investigations have just started on Wednesday and I do not imagine that they reached results by Thursday, said Maher.

He urged all world media not to be rashful in jumping to conclusions. Maher said there is indeed security cooperation among the world's security authorities to collect as much information as possible about the suspects.

He said, we heard statements by Israeli officials trying to blame the attacks on Arabs and Muslims and we know their sinister goals of course.

Egypt has warned against Israeli attempts to take the US attacks as a cover-up to carry on US events, said Maher.

We tell them candidly that this will not benefit them but will rather turn against them, he added.
