Egypt-USA, Politics, 9/15/2001
"President Hosni Mubarak voiced shock of the Egyptian people over the death of innocent civilians in the Tuesday attacks in his interviews with the CNN, the NBC and the United Press," said Information Minister Safwat al-Sherif.
Sherif said that President Mubarak held an expanded ministerial meeting to discuss the situation and sent a cable of condolences to US President George W. Bush.
"Judgements should not be passed just for suspicions," said the minister' adding that terrorism has no religion as victims of the attacks are Christians, Muslims and Jews.
He added that he agrees with Bush's call on his fellow Americans to be rational when dealing with their fellow Muslims or those Americans of Arab origin.
"Egypt is one of the countries that suffered most of terrorism and had hard times in combatting it," said Sherif.
He added that Mubarak renewed call for holding an international conference on fighting terrorism whose outcome should be binding to all world countries.
"President Mubarak reiterated Egypt's stance as regards the terrorist acts condemned by his country," said Sherif.
He noted that Mubarak underlined the importance of holding an international conference on fighting terrorism under the umbrella of the UN at the leaders' level to adopt a decisive and permanent stance against terrorism, which threatens international peace and targets security of citizens no matter where they are.
Sherif and State Information Service (SIS) Chairman Nabil Othman attended the interviews.
