On the meeting between Arafat, Peres
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 9/15/2001

The Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres on Friday made two telephone calls with the UN secretary general Kofi Annan and with the German foreign minister Yushka Fischer.

The Israeli radio said that Annan and Fischer expressed their support to convening a meeting between Peres and the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat.

During his telephone calls, Peres said that Arafat should halt the Palestinian Intifada before starting any meeting with him.

Meantime, the Israeli defense minister Benjamin Bin Aleazer said that the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres will discuss with the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat in their forthcoming occupied territories meeting ceasing fire ultimately in the occupied territories.

Bin Aleazer added in a statement to the Israeli radio on Friday that every possible effort should be made to convene such a meeting.

Meanwhile, Political sources at the court " divan" of the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon ruled out the convening of the forthcoming meeting between Arafat and Peres tomorrow ( Sunday ) at Gaza airport.

The sources attributed ruling out the convening of the meeting to the strong opposition this expected meeting received by the Israeli ministers, and several Knesset members on Thursday who considered that it is wrong to hold such a meeting during this time.

To the same effect, the Israeli radio said that the Israeli general security system denied that his chairman Ave Dikhter has any intention to meet with the chairman of the Palestinian preventive security department in the West Bank Jibril al-Rajjoub, in Cairo during the few coming days.

However, Palestinian news said that al-Rajjoub headed to Cairo to meet with Dikhter and the chairman of the Egyptian general security chairman in preparation for the meeting between Arafat and Peres.
