King Mohammed launches new academic year
Morocco, Education, 9/14/2001

Morocco's King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay Rachid, Thursday launched the new academic year with a visit to a primary school in the northern city of Tangiers.

During the visit to the school, where 1200 pupils are enrolled, the king was briefed on the conditions in which the new academic year starts.

Registration rate of 6-year old children progressed tangibly to stand at 94 percent, representing a 6.5 percent rise compared to last year.

The number of pupils registered nationwide stands at 5,800,000, including 4,150,000 in primary schools, 1,150,000 in secondary schools and 500,000 in high schools.

King Mohammed VI stressed the importance granted to the global success of the educational system reform, enforced part of the implementation of the national charter on education-training.

The king stressed the need to generalize the schooling of all six-year old children, an objective that should be materialized in all Moroccan provinces in September 2002.

King Mohammed VI urged teachers and national education cadres to double efforts to build up quality schools that will guarantee access to useful and functional knowledge and know-how to all the children of Morocco whether in rural or urban areas.
