Syria in the Eyes of Europe: an exhibition
Syria-European Union, Culture, 9/14/2001
After Damascus, the exhibition " Syria in the Eyes of Europe" opens in Aleppo tomorrow (Saturday), 15th September. Organized by the European Union, it aims at illustrating the way in which, over time, European intellectuals have looked at Syria, in different ways, often with benevolence, mostly fascinated.
Writers, consuls or simple travelers, painters, photographers, archaeologists are part of an exhibition conceived by its organizers as a " mosaic," mixing times and disciplines.
Four Main themes are proposed to the visitor - the Euphrates, Damascus, Aleppo and " Travelers"- as well as ten contemporary creations with Syria as their inspiration. The graphic designer was Francois Helly of Lyon. The exhibition's objective is best expressed in the " travelers" theme. Having analyzed the Orientalist fashion which seized 19th century Europe, the author, Nathalie Galesne- a Rome- based French author and journalist- asks the central question: " Is Europe capable on the eve of this third millennium to look at the other without making its own model the only reference in its relationship with the Arab world?"
Organized by the Delegation of the European Commission in Syria, this exhibition illustrates another fact- the cultural one- of the complex relationship between European countries and today's European Union with Syria.
