The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Wednesday sent a cable to the US secretary of State Colin Powell. It reads as follows: I have followed news on catastrophic attacks at the American people and government launched in the US. I express to your excellency deep regret for the huge number of human losses of innocent people and in properties and denunciation and condemnation to these criminal acts. The Shura Council Committee of Arab, Foreign and national security affairs condemned Tuesday's series of attacks in New York and Washington. In statement issued Wednesday, the committee asserted that all countries should collectively stand in the face of terrorism all over the world. In its statement, the Shura Council committee offered condolences to the American people on the death of victims. Go

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak emphasized the importance of reactivating an initiative he had previously launched for holding a UN sponsored conference against terrorism. He renewed his call during a telephone call he got from UN Chief Kofi Annan. Their conversation tackled Tuesday's attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and Pentagon in Washington. Go

The Israeli radio quoted a source at the American embassy in Damascus as saying that the embassy was closed just for one day with the aim to re- estimate the security conditions. Go

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has concluded a two- day visit to Saudi Arabia during which he held talks with the Saudi King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz and with crown prince Abdullah dealt with prospects of cooperation between the two countries and means of strengthening and supporting them as well as the situation on the Arab and international arenas.
