More infrastructure projects to be implemented soon
Egypt, Economics, 9/12/2001
Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid told Middle East News Agency that the government gives priority to developing the sectors of airports, seaports, roads and the infrastructure.
These sectors receive priority by the government and the coming period will witness more infrastructure projects, particularly in the fields of communications, electricity, roads and airports.
"Tenders are invited to widen the Cairo Alexandria and Cairo-Port said highways.
Two other roads will be built; one along the coast of the Red Sea from Suez to Shalatin and the second from Cairo to Aswan and the Cairo-Mersa Matrouh road will be improved," said Ebeid.
Ebeid added that the government's attention to the improvement of the infrastructure has been extended to give the private sector a chance to manage seaports in order to modernize means of their management and introduce new thinking to these vital utilities.
He asserted that this will greatly contribute to the development of the area north of the Gulf of Suez. Work is continuing at the port east of Port Said that will be operated in October.
"The government has taken measures to remove obstacles in the face of foreign investment in order to push forward the wheel of development," Ebeid said.
Ebeid pointed out that during the coming period more projects will be offered for privatization, foremost among which is to offer a part of the shares of the Egyptian communications company (telecom Egypt) to investors within the framework of the government's efforts to widen the base of ownership and increase the role of the private sector in the economic process.
