Mubarak discuses ME deterioration with Irish FM

Egyptian President Mubarak received Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen. Maher and Ireland's ambassador in Cairo Peter Gunning attended the meeting.
Mubarak's talks with the Irish Minister comes as part of the contacts the president is holding at the international level to put an end to the Israeli military escalation and the deteriorating situation in the region and resume peace negotiations.
Cowen arrived in Cairo on Sunday as part of a regional tour that will include Palestinian self-rule areas, Israel, Lebanon and Syria.
Ireland will assume the presidency of the UN Security Council as of October 1.
The Irish foreign minister appreciated President Mubarak's positive and important good offices to end the Middle East crisis.
At a joint press conference with Maher after their second session of talks on Sunday, the Irish top diplomat said that President Mubarak keeps a wise vision.
He said President Mubarak is a man of peace and a very important and positive element in exerting efforts to realize peace in the region.
Asked about efforts to be exerted by Ireland, during its chairmanship of the UN Security Council, on sending international observers to the Palestinian territories, the Irish Minister said that his country was trying to reach a unanimous agreement on sending the observers.
Meanwhile, Maher described his meeting with the Irish Foreign Minister as ''very fruitful", expressing appreciation for the efforts exerted by Ireland to find a solution to the Middle East problem.
Maher denied knowledge of the date of the meeting of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat with Israeli Foreign Minister On his evaluation of the Arab Foreign Ministers meeting in Cairo on Sunday in the light of reports on failure to make progress to halt the Israeli aggression on the Palestinians, Maher said that every meeting of the Arab foreign Ministers sought to do something for the Palestinian cause.
