Morocco, Mauritania resolved to consolidate partnership
Mauritania-Morocco, Politics, 9/11/2001

King Mohammed VI of Morocco and President Mouaouiya Ould Sid' Ahmed Tayaa of Mauritania voiced resolve to consolidate partnership between the two countries in all realms.

This came in an exchange of toasts here Monday during the dinner banquet President Mouaouiya hosted in honor of King Mohammed VI, on the first day of the sovereign's three-day official visit to Mauritania.

King Mohammed VI, who described bilateral relations as "excellent" and who hailed the coordination initiated between the two countries since President Mouaouiya visited Morocco in April 2000, voiced resolve to hoist these relations "to the level of an exemplary partnership between two neighborly and brotherly countries."

The sovereign also hailed the coordination between the two countries regarding their civilizational, spiritual and cultural role.

In his toast, President Mouaouiya also voiced determination to carry on "fruitful consultation to enhance cooperation between the two countries that are bound by ties of brotherhood and affection," and said the royal visit will mark a stride in consolidating further these ties.

He said cooperation between the two countries is scoring encouraging results, as evidenced by the works of the high joint commission and the regular bilateral meetings, opening promising prospects to the enlargement of the scope of this cooperation.

The two heads of state also spoke of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), mustering besides Morocco and Mauritania, Algeria, Libya and Tunisia, and of the need to build up a strong grouping in the region.

The UMA construction, "requires the lowering down of obstacles hindering its march through a realistic vision and a strategic method that heeds Maghreban peoples' interests and materializes their aspirations to complementarity and unity," King Mohammed VI said.

"We are deeply convinced that the edification of the Arab Maghreb is an imperative choice to promote complementarity between our countries and take up the challenge of globalization," President Mouaouiya said, adding that the most efficient way to give momentum to the edification of the UMA lies in enhancing trade exchanges, setting up institutions and undertaking joint development projects.
