Rabat, Nouakchott concerned over tragic situation in middle east
Mauritania-Morocco, Politics, 9/11/2001

Morocco and Mauritania have voiced concern over the tragic situation in the Middle East and especially the situation of the defenseless Palestinian people.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco, who started Monday a three-day official visit to Mauritania, and President Mouaouiya Ould Sid' Ahmed Tayaa of Mauritania, voiced worry over the serious situation prevailing in the region.

King Mohammed VI expressed, in an exchange of speeches here Monday during the dinner banquet hosted in his honor by president Mouaouiya "deep concern over the tragic evolution of the Palestinian issue, due to the systematic aggressions perpetrated against the brotherly Palestinian people by the Israeli government, which ignores all its international commitments related to the peace process."

The sovereign called on the international community "to be up to its responsibilities, to put an end to these aggressions, and to secure the necessary protection to the defenseless Palestinian people."

He also called for more Arab and Islamic mobilization to defend the Arab rights and the Islamic holy shrines through Israel's withdrawal from all Arab occupied territories and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Al-Quds Asharif as its capital, and renewed Morocco's constant readiness to take all initiatives and back all laudable efforts meant to establish peace and security in this region, in accordance with international legality.

President Mouaouiya on his part described the blockade imposed on the Palestinian people as "unfair" and the Palestinians' living conditions as "tragic."

He stressed the need to stop violence to spare the region a flare up and to return to the negotiation table in the frame of the peace process.

Conformity with international legality is the sole way to establish a fair and lasting peace that restores to the Palestinians their legitimate right to establish an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital, and guarantees the liberation of all occupied Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan heights.

The two heads of state who called for the lifting of all forms of embargoes against Arab countries, and for the preservation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all Arab states also deplored the ailments and armed conflicts befalling some African countries and called for putting an end to these conflicts that impede Africa's development.
