King Mohammed flies to Mauritania
Morocco-Mauritania, Politics, 9/10/2001
King Mohammed VI left Tangiers this Monday for Mauritania, where he starts an official visit at the invitation of President Mouaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya.
The visit, the first of its Kind by a Moroccan king to the Maghreban country, is seen as a major step towards stronger relations between Morocco and Mauritania.
The Royal visit comes after the one President Ould Taya paid to Morocco in April 2000 and that highlighted with the creation of a Moroccan-Mauritanian High Joint Commission.
The Commission, called to supervise the promotion of bilateral cooperation in all fields, held a first meeting in Nouakchott in June 2000 under the chairmanship of Moroccan Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, and Mauritanian peer, Sheikh Al-Afia Ould Mohamed Khouna.
Several cooperation accords were concluded at the end of the meeting, paving the way for stronger cooperation, especially in telecommunications realms.
Actually, few months later, Morocco's phone operator, Maroc Telecom, purchased 51 percent of shares in Mauritania's Maurtel for $ 84 million.
Another important bilateral accord provided for the construction by Morocco of a 470-km road between Nouakchott (the capital city) and Nouadhibou (the economic and financial capital). The road will cost $ 70 million.
The Royal visit is expected to mark a new turning point in bilateral relations, as the two leaders are aware that trade exchanges between the two countries need to be hoisted to their excellent political ties.
Morocco's exports to Mauritania were worth $ 47.56 million in 2000 against $ 11.47 million in 1999.
