Moussa, Cassini hold talks
Regional-Italy, Politics, 9/8/2001

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa Thursday held a session of talks with Speaker of the Italian House of Representatives P. Fernando Cassini, currently visiting Egypt.

They discussed the latest Mideast developments, current situation in the Palestinian territories and ways to boost cooperation between the Arab World and Italy.

Moussa discussed with Speaker of Italian Parliament Thursday the problems in the Mediterranean basin.

Moussa and Cassini also discussed the tension and wrath generated by the policy of terror against Palestinians as being perpetrated by Israel which is enjoying a wary silence in the European circles.

In a joint news conference with Cassini, Moussa said U The declaration of the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) in Durban proves that false propaganda and attempts to muster the world public opinion on the Israeli side failed."

Cassini said he telephoned Italian Foreign Minister to send urgent assistance to the Palestinians and intensify the European role, said Moussa.

Moussa said "We do not see any European activity that might replace the US declining role in the peace process."

All people's rights to live in peace and the Palestinians right to have their parliament meet should be respected, said Cassini.

The daily humiliations to which the Palestinians are being subjected should be ended, added the Italian chief legislator.

This period needs courage in order to hammer out compromise solutions and needs also a swift unrestricted European move, added Cassini.

On the possible communique that can be released by WCAR in Durban, Cassini said "Let's wait. We need to show respect for the state of Israel to help it go for peace."
