Implementation of agreements is the most significant issue

Akhbar al Youm run an interview with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat about his assessment to the ongoing events in the Middle East. Excerpts:

* The forthcoming meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres is not the first one of the kind. I've recently met with him in

Cairo in the presence of Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, and Dr. Osama El-Baz.

* We also met in Lisbon on the sidelines of International Socialism in the presence of the Portuguese Prime Minister and Norwegian Foreign Minister who was a member of the Mitchell commission.

* Both meetings didn't result in the implementation of anything agreed upon.

There was also other meeting with Dr. Nabil Sha'ath and Dr. Saeb Ereikat. At the beginning of the meeting, he said that he had no mandate to take decisions.

* The meetings and agreements are not important. What is really important is the implementation of the agreements.

* We look forward to carry out the previous agreements including the Sharm El-Sheikh accord hosted by President Mubarak, in the presence of former President Clinton, Ring Abdullah of Jordan, and Javier Solana.

* The time of the meeting has yet to be set.

* The European stance is good. they are sustaining their bids to reach an agreement on carry out the already signed agreements.

* We look forward for an effective role from the USA, being the principal sponsor of the peace process, which started in Madrid by George Bush sr., and we hope that George Bush jr. would continue the same march.

* With the second year of Intifada, there should be an international move and pressure on Israeli government to implement agreements.

* Despite our sufferance, the many years of struggle, we are still steadfast and shall eventually raise the Palestinian banner on the walls, minarets and churches of Jerusalem.
