Effective participation by the main peace-broker
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 9/8/2001

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat lauded President Hosni Mubarak for his effort to halt Israeli acts of aggession.

In statements to reporters he said that President Mubarak is following up with us all the details of the developments in the situation and efforts, on all arenas, to back the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle to establish their independent state with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital, said Arafat.

He added that a Palestinian-Egyptian-Jordanian meeting would be held in Cairo Saturday, at the level of foreign ministers, to coordinate stances before the convocation of the Arab foreign -ministers' conference in the Egyptian capital on Sunday.

Arafat is expected to participate in the Arab foreign ministers meeting to discuss the American role in reining in the mounting Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people.

"We are yearning for an effective participation and continued movement by the main peace-broker, the US Administration", Arafat said, recalling that former US president George Bush was the one who ushered in the peacemaking drive in Madrid and hoped his son, President George Bush, would finish what his father had started.

The barbaric Israeli perpetrations against the Palestinian people, Arafat said the successive Israeli governments worked, via all possible ways and means, to change the geographic and demographic situation in the occupied lands, especially in Al Quds Al Sharif.

He accused the Israeli government of working to isolate the Palestinian citizens and banning them from practicing their religious rituals and their right to work, move and live peacefully.

Arafat also accused Israel of demolishing Palestinian houses and public installations, confiscating their lands, laying waste their farmland and turning their villages, towns and camps into jails.

The ugliness of these Israeli policies was rendered more evident during the 12-month heroic Intifada of the Palestinian people, with Israel resorting to all kinds of weapons, including internationally-prohibited ones, in its arsenal to kill, demolish and assassinate, said Arafat.

He also accused Israel of publicly and officially practicing state terrorism against the Palestinian people through its assassination and physical liquidation policy, the latest being the assassination of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Secretary General martyr Abu Ali Moustafa.

power attacking unarmed civilians with depleted uranium, US-made F-15s and F-16s, Apache helicopter gun ships, tanks and laser-guided missiles.

On the lists of would-be Palestinian martyrs prepared by Israel, President Arafat asserted that the Israelis forged a list containing the names of 470 Palestinian politicians and military officials to be assassinated.

Commenting on the impact of the Intifada on the Arab domestic situation, Arafat was proud it succeeded in reviving Arab summits first in Cairo, then in Amman and next year in Beirut.

Assisting and enabling the Palestinian people to realise their sacred and legitimate right to independence and self determination should not be at the expense of any other party, said Arafat, arguing that an independent Palestinian state was the basin guarantee for the realization and establishment of just and durable peace, i.e. the "peace of the brave", in the region.

Only just peace as based on international legitimacy resolutions and the establishment of the Palestinian state with Al Quds as its capital would secure security and stability for he Palestinian and Israeli peoples, he said.

Arafat was hopeful international resolutions would be enforced in Palestine as they were in many places of the world, stressing that double-standards undermined the credibility of international organisations.

Arafat regretted the state of paralysis and inaction on the part of the international community vis-a-vis the war being waged by Israel against his people and its mounting military aggression on them.

Arafat pressed for forging the appropriate international mechanism to compel Israel to end its war against the Palestinians and accept the dispatch of international monitors to supervise and accelerate the implementation of the Egyptian Jordanian overture and the Mitchell recommendations.

Arafat pressed Israel to honour its pledges, signed agreements, international legitimacy resolutions and Sharm elSheikh understandings by ending its occupation of the occupied Palestinian and Arab lands and giving the Palestinians the right to an honorable life within their independent state.
